“Judging A Book By Its Cover” – Ambeth Ocampo. “Judging A Book By Its Coverage” – Frank A Hilario. The Question Of PH’s Declaration Of Independence In 1896

Not well-known, I am an 83-year old writer & editor, self-taught, inspired by the Reader’s Digest during my high school days in the mid-1950s. Well-known Ambeth Ocampo, 63 years old, is a much-respected historian – but today, I find I can edit him! (Once an editor, always an editor, eh?)

Right now, I’m reading Mr Ocampo’s Facebook sharing of Wed 27 March 2024:

Historians read differently. While most people start with the so-called “Front Matter” (Title Page, Introduction, Table of Contents, etc.) historians usually start at the back of the book, checking out the Bibliography or the list of sources (manuscript, printed, oral, and digital) used in the writing of the book. Historians judge a book not by its cover but by its “Back Matter.”

Mr Ocampo: If you judge a book by the list of sources that was used to produce the contents, then you are giving weight to the sources (which you should), but not much weight to the words of the author (which you should not). Ignoring logic and/or originality of the author is dangerous, even in history writings, especially if the writer is original! (Well, I’m not surprised, because historians are hardly original, here or abroad.)

I editor would give equal weights to the list of sources and the thoughts of the author of the book, whether of history or not. Nowadays, you can always check digitally – you just have to google skillfully, and patiently. (Yes, you may have to google repeatedly – but that saves you from buying a new or old book!)

More to the point, he may not have realized it, but Mr Ocampo himself needs an editor.

Example: Mr Ocampo never mentions the fact that the alleged Philippines’ “Declaration of Independence” (from Spain) declared on 12 June 1896 was actually a “Declaration of Dependence” (on the United States)!

Here is the historical proof. This is from the “Declaration of Independence” dated 12 June 1898 (Wikipedia, en.wikisource.org):

And having as witness to the rectitude of our intentions the Supreme Judge of the Universe, and under the protection of the Powerful and Humanitarian Nation, the United States of America, we do hereby proclaim and declare solemnly in the name and by authority of the people of these Philippine Islands…
(lower image from shutterstock.com)

(And how many did sign that document? If I am not mistaken, there were 84 signatures, from “Don Segundo Serrano Arellano” to “Don Ladislao Diwa” (from Wikipedia, en.wikisource.org).

If you call “under the protection of” the same as a “declaration of independence” – then you must be using an alien dictionary!

That is to say, historians must be their own editors – or hire somebody else to sharpen their logic, not to mention their language, especially a foreign language like English.

In any case, the way historical events are shaping up, with the threats from Red China, the reality is that PH is still under the protection of the US of A. History does repeat itself!@517

Pope Francis Revolutionizes The Ten Commandments As He Simplifies And Thereby Amplifies Them!

As I a member see it, the Roman Catholic Church, which is as old as the 1st Century AD, has been rebirthed by its Head, Pope Francis, if unintentionally, 7 years ago yet when he declared, according to the website “Cool Catholics” (coolcatholics.org), which I found out today, Monday, 25 March 2024: “15 Acts of Charity As A Concrete Manifestation Of Love.” The source says, “The season of Lent is not about being less – fasting and abstinence, but [more] of being more – prayer and charity (love). Pope Francis proposes these 15 simple acts of charity as concrete manifestations of love this Lent.”

Pope Francis’ list, dated 03 March 2017, comprises the following, copied verbatim:
(“Simple Acts Of Love” image from ebay.ph)

1.   SMILE. A Christian is always cheerful.

2.   Say THANK YOU for little things (even if you don’t have to).

3.   Remind others how much you LOVE them.

4.   GREET with joy the persons you see every day.

5.   LISTEN to other people’s stories without prejudice, and with love.

6.   STOP to help. Pay attention to whoever needs you.

7.   Try to RAISE the spirits of people around you.

8.   CELEBRATE the qualities or success of others, thus avoiding envy or jealousy.

9.   SORT OUT the things you no longer use or need, and give them to those in need.

10.        Be ready to HELP when you are needed so that others may rest.

11.        GIVE CORRECTIONS with love; do not keep quiet out of fear.

12.        Maintain good relations with those around you.

13.        Keep clean the things you use in the house.

14.        HELP others overcome obstacles.

15.        CALL, and call on, your parents more often.

Perhaps Pope Francis did not intend to, but if you ask me, those “15 Acts Of Charity” reduces the terror that the “The Ten Commandments” evoke (this list from Our Lady Of Sorrows – St Anthony (ols-sa.org):

1.   I am the Lord, thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.

2.   Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

3.   Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.

4.   Honor your father and your mother.

5.   You shall not kill.

6.   You shall not commit adultery.

7.   You shall not steal.

8.   You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

9.   You shall not cover your neighbor’s wife.

10.        You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Today, as I compare with Pope Francis’ list, I see what’s “wrong” with those Ten Commandments is that, except #3 and #4, they are all stated in the negative!

In contrast, Pope Francis 15 acts of love are all stated in the positive! They all encourage, not discourage, everyone of us. They are by themselves statements of love intended to move the world positively.

What’s more, with Pope Francis’ list of 15 acts of love, membership in a specific church or congregation or group is not a requirement – while the constant & consistent practice of charity is quite necessary. I love Pope Francis!@517

Your Book Is Good, But It Needs Editing – Good Or Better Or Best Editing! I Always Do My Best

Above, “Get The Right BOOK EDITING” says Book Launchers (booklaunchers.com) – right there, they are right! But they are showing only “The Right” and not “The Best” book editing! American book authors and editors are not always right!

Above, why does Book Launchers only show the typewriter for typing and the ballpen for editing, but not the personal computer (PC)?

I am telling you: I am a teacher (UP Los Baños BSA major in Ag Edu, 1965), and I taught myself digital writing, editing and desktop publishing (DTP).

And I have the digital experience, having been The Editor In Chief of at least 20 books and an ISI-attaining Philippine Journal of Crop Science (PJCS) published by the Crop Science Society of the Philippines based at the UPLB campus in Laguna. So I know what I am talking about: “Experience is the best teacher,” as according to Julius Caesar. Roman military genius. As the one-man band Editor In Chief, desktop publishing with my PC, I made the PJCS up-to-date in 3 years (2003-2006) – and included in the international prestige list called “ISI” the next year (2007). Of course, the ISI requires high-standard editing.

So, I say: “Get The Right Digital Editing” for your book or journals! And if you get Frank A Hilario, I promise you the best!
(“Books & PC” from medium.com)

I will edit your beloved book using my experience of 48 years – (a) my editing typewritten pages from 1975 to 1985 – newsletters, journals, and magazines; and (b) my editing digital pages (from 1991 up to now) – books, magazines, journals.

Filmmaker Pamela Yates says, “The digital revolution has had a democratizing effect. Now anyone can be a filmmaker, but to be a good filmmaker is as hard as it ever was” (azquotes.com). Likewise, I say, “Now anyone can be a digital editor, but to be a good digital editor is as hard as it can be!”

I can do the desktop publishing (DTP) work for your book, up to the portable document format (pdf), which is the digital file that goes into the actual print. The pdf copy has all the necessary elements, from cover to cover, exactly as you would like them (and/or approve of them) to appear in the printed book for distribution.

Best to have that digitally prepared pdf first before going to the printer – so that at your convenience and right in your respective rooms, you and the Editor can produce an outstanding intellectual product.

More. Whether your book is about (alphabetically arranged) – agriculture, economics, management, science, technology – it probably needs an index to help the readers look for data and/or information.

You may think you are already very good in the English language and have had years of experience and do not need any editor at all – you are probably mistaken!

Also: A good Introduction will help sell your book – I can write that one. And an extensive index, I can prepare that too.

Frank A Hilario will show you best: “Go digital!”@517

Reinventing The Science Journal – From Drab To Exciting!

Dull, definitely all dull! Science journals beginning with the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to that of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, are uninviting to read, even by those who are scientists – except if they have a paper published in that issue. From Atlanta in the US to Zimbabwe in Africa, are all The Editors In Chief dull, passionless, as dry as dust? From America to Asia, look at the above images – seriously, they are telling you, “Science is nothing to be excited about!”
(“Science” from pngegg.com, “Asian” from ccsenet.org)

How do you make science journals sexy?

How intelligent are the world’s science journals? On the cover, all could be visually attractive, but either they don’t know how, or they don’t care.

Today, Wednesday, 07 Feb 2024, Manila, suddenly I have an idea of how to reinvent the technical journal so that readers anticipate each issue and the surprises it brings! And it is any or all of these:

1.   Publish speculative, theoretical, non-research papers by any professional in any field within the journal’s wide subject territory;

2.   Include contrary views that are presented with passion but not poison;

3.   Publish digitally at least quarterly (4 times a year).

If you do all 3, the universe of science publications will never be the same again!

I have been thinking of how to make each issue of a journal more exciting since I saw on Facebook the post about the Journal Of Human Ecology & Sustainability (JHES) being published by the College of Human Ecology (CHE) of UP Los Baños, my alma mater (BS Agriculture, major in Ag Edu, 1965). (Yes, I’m a Senior!)

Congratulations! Extremely glad that UP Los Baños is now publishing online a science journal – this teacher & editor says furthering education should not be limited to printed pages of journals.

As far as this digital denizen know, the Journal of Human Ecology and Sustainability (JHES) is a historical first in all educational institutions in my country. Publishing a science journal online is an open invitation for contributions to knowledge, and I must congratulate the publisher CHE of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) for this educational endeavor.

My question is: “Who is The Editor In Chief?” The many-authored post does not include the name. Not that I am applying for the position, but I want to congratulate her/him for that first-in-history digital journal in the Philippines!

I have farther/further suggestions:

(1)   For the JHES, search for a Financial Sponsor so that within CHE you can create a good-sized Journal Team that would include a Board of Editors (including from abroad), an Executive Adviser, and Internet connections for the journal staff at the office and at home.

(2)   Make sure that the Managing Editor knows what s/he should be doing, including spending for and spinning stories or articles.

(3)   Choose The Editor In Chief as someone who has a proven outstanding experience in the world of digital publishing.

Good luck, College of Human Ecology, UP Los Baños!@517

On A Philippine Media Columnist Writing A Book On Philippine Agriculture, 2024

If you are a columnist of PH media, I as an editor have some advice for you for compiling your columns into a book. These thoughts come to me as I edit a book by Conrado Francisco Heradilla, the book titled “The Rise Of Rice In Philippine Society,” 345 pages. (Oh, the name of the author and the title of the book I have given are fictitious, but really, that book and that author are real. There are lessons for you if you are an author, or wish to be one, whatever the subject of the book, in the development of our dear country, the Philippines.)
(“Why Filipino” from youtube.com)

My advices, plural:

#1, Title

To the title “The Rise Of Rice In Philippine Society,” I would have added this subtitle: “Where Is Science In The Rise & Fall Of Rice & Consumers In Philippine Society?” itself a good book summary.

#2, Chapters

The Introduction itself should have a title, to indicate or imply what the reader can expect to find in the book. To catch the reader’s immediate attention is important.

Chapter 1 – History Of Rice In The Philippines

The chapter can begin anywhere in time, if only to suggest the age-old and can-be-improved method(s) of planting rice in these islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The chapter should end with the current major problems of the production, consumption and the business of rice. The problems I see, or the areas that need improvement, are:

(1)   Yields.

(2)   Prices.

(3)   Technologies.

(4)   Credit.

(5)   Economies of Scale.

(6)   How Stands PH Farming In Asia?

(7)   What To Do Now?

Chapter 2 – Yields
Yields differ in different provinces in the country, even given the same rice variety – what is the basic problem/explanation?

Chapter 3 – Technologies
“Technology” refers to the variety of rice as well as how to plant, grow, harvest and process rice.

Chapter 4 – Credit
The most prevalent form of credit for Filipino farmers is called “Five-Six” where you owe someone five pesos and you give back six pesos within a very short period of time. Banks have yet to attract farmers who may lack much education anyway.

Chapter 5 – Economies Of Scale
Farmers are friendly to each other but do not form informal teams to help each other grow rice more profitably together. (No, I don’t think my alma mater UP Los Baños teaches economies of scale in its essence, only in its definition.)

Chapter 6 – How Stands PH Farming In Asia?
ANN says, the “Philippines Way Behind Other ASEAN Countries in Agri Performance” (Author Not Named, 07 Dec 2018, Agriculture Magazineagriculture.com.ph):

The Philippines lags behind – in a number of ways – compared to other member countries of ASEAN when it comes to agriculture. The facts and figures that tell us the reason for this were presented by Dr William Dar during a round table discussion on the future of Philippine agriculture…

Chapter 7 – What & How To Do Now?

Your guess is as good as mine!?@517

Chapter 8 – xx

#3, Final Word, xx

You Writing Manuscripts, Editing & Publishing, All-Digital Is Best – Frank A Hilario Is All-Digital!

In the world of manuscripts – theses, papers to present and/or submitted for publication, publishing a book, journal or report – all-digital is best. That is a sum of my actual manuscript experience in the last 48 years, since 1975, when the Forest Research Institute (FORI) hired me, and by the time I left FORI in 1980, I had become the creator and The Editor In Chief of 3 FORI publications: monthly newsletter Canopy, quarterly technical journal Sylvatrop, and quarterly color magazine Habitat. Those were typewriter days. I loved them! (Note: Past tense.)

A great many years later, I myself experienced the happy power of the digital world starting in 2007 when William Dar, Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), based in India, hired me as a Writer From Home (WFH). I did that by writing for my dedicated ICRISAT-only blog, “iCRiSAT Watch.” I was WFH until 2014 when Mr Dar had to retire from ICRISAT. By that time, I had desktop-published 8 books and ICRISAT did publish 7 of them. The first book was “Team ICRISAT Champions The Poor,” my title. (Mr Dar was so good a DG and that is why ICRISAT honored him with 3 terms of 5 years each!)

Nota Bene: I was already all-digital in those years, 2007-2014 – I did all my writing, editing, blogging, desktop publishing with Microsoft Word, starting with Microsoft Word 2007, if I remember right. In the above image, it says, “Word 2016: Insert and Format Graphics.” I have always done that. And oh yes, I am using Word 2016 right now – I have been using the different versions of MS Word since 1988 (if I remember right), with all their shortcuts and stuff.
(“Word 2016” from youtube.com)

My actual field experiences:

Editor In Chief: 1975-1980, Forest Research Institute (FORI), 3 publications: newsletter technical journal, and color magazine.

Writer, Editor & Desktop Publisher (WFH): 2007-2014, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), 8 books

Editor In Chief: 2003-2008, Philippine Journal of Crop Science (PJCS) – from being late 3 years, FAH brought it to up-to-date in 3 years (2003-2006), and ISI (Web Of Knowledge) 2007.

Why have I not been using the dedicated desktop publishing (DTP) software like Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Publisher? Because I found, already in 2007 (that’s 16 years ago) that MS Word had all the friendly features (and commands) I needed to write, edit, create & insert & format graphics etc that I needed to desktop-publish a whole issue of a magazine or a whole book.

How popular is Word 2016 anyway in the world? I just googled for “Word 2016” and Google said, “About 3,630,000 results (0.34 seconds).” That’s 3.63 million results. Word 2016 was released in 2015, and there had been many versions afterwards, but with Word 2016, I can work wonders!

What can I do for you with Word 2016?

(1)          Write/blog for you.

(2)          Edit your articles, publications, theses etc.

(3)          Publish your book.

A Magazine Of Kindness (AMoK), The Opposite Of Amok (“Crazed With Negative Intent”), AMoK is “Excited With Positive Intent”

You and I, yes we want to change the world, from Occasions of Hate to Occasions of Love, from Continuing Destruction to Continuing Construction, from Poverty to Prosperity – in Truth and in Time. With all that intense intent, we are being crazy, yes – yet the world is crazier!

Right now, I want to begin by coming out with a monthly publication, A Magazine Of Kindness (AMoK). As writers you and I, The Editor In Chief, with AMoK, we are going to revolutionize the whole wide world of journalism whether digital or print. With Kindness.
(“Kindness” from stock.adobe.com)

For the concept of Development, AMoK will be pursuing and proselytizing for “Regenerative Development” in contrast with “Sustainable Development,” and/or “Regenerative Capitalism” in contrast with “Sustainable Capitalism.”

If you don’t know anything about those species of Development and/or species of Capitalism, no problem. Just write about how to improve Philippine agriculture to solve the twin problems of Farmer Poverty and Climate Change.

If you don’t know about those 2 Goliaths either, you have to do some digital research yourself! (Alternatively, you can browse the many essays in this blog where you are reading this essay: The Editor In Chief (blogspot.com) – Ctrl+click that link to get there and/or return.

We are on the side of Love, not Hate. And Kindness is the cheapest and yet the most expensive form of Love. We can all be kind if we but try!

If you want to learn how to write better without paying for the services of a tutor, write your piece and submit to AMoK! If you submit today, your article, poem, or short story will appear in the maiden issue of AMoK – and you don’t have to pay me (I’ll accept a compliment).

In the meantime, I am looking for a kindhearted businessman, individual, family or group to finance the editorial & desktop production of the articles up to actual printing of copies of each issue of AMoK.

Why capitalize on Kindness?

Martin Luther King – “Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”

Harlan Coben – “You want people lined up, Will. You want the good guys on one side, the bad on the other. It doesn't work that way, does it? It is never that simple. Love, for example, leads to hate. I think that was what started it all. Primitive love.”

George William Russell – “Love and hate have a magical transforming power. They are the great soul changers. We grow through their exercise into the likeness of what we contemplate.”

Ella Wheeler Wilcox – “Love lights more fires than hate extinguishes.”

Charlotte Brontë – “Love me, then, or hate me, as you will," I said at last, "you have my full and free forgiveness: ask now for God's, and be at peace.”

Michael Bassey Johnson – “There is no reason to hate anybody, because we came into existence, not by hate-making, but through love-making.”

Kindness is free – and will set you free from Hate!@517

It Hurts To Say “Goodbye!”

Mal (not her real name). My first love, it’s her birthday today, January 17, Saturday. I said my final “Goodbye!” to her some 65 years ago...
